Peter Obi Urges Nigerians to Reject Tinubu Over Persistent Power Failure
Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on Nigerians not to vote for President Bola Tinubu in 2027, citing the administration’s failure to deliver reliable electricity despite campaign promises.
In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Obi reminded the public of Tinubu’s 2022 pledge: “If I do not provide steady electricity in my first four years, do not vote for me for a second term.”
Obi pointed out that the national grid has collapsed multiple times in January 2026 alone, and about 12 times throughout 2025. He argued that power generation remains critically low (hovering below 4,000 megawatts in many periods), causing widespread outages that continue to cripple businesses, increase costs, and worsen living conditions for ordinary Nigerians.
He wrote:
“The promise was clear. Yet, in January 2026 alone, the national grid has already collapsed twice, and the month is not even over. Last year, it collapsed about twelve times. This reality sharply contradicts the promise and should worry every patriotic Nigerian.”
Obi urged citizens to hold the President accountable and reject any attempt at a second term if the power crisis persists. He described the situation as a clear failure of leadership that directly impacts economic growth, security, and quality of life.
The statement has sparked intense reactions online, with supporters of Obi hailing it as a strong reminder of unfulfilled promises, while Tinubu’s allies accuse Obi of playing politics instead of offering constructive solutions.
As power outages remain a major pain point for millions of Nigerians, Obi’s intervention adds to the growing debate on accountability ahead of the 2027 general elections.
