Tems’ ‘What You Need’ surpasses Tyla’s ‘Water’ in Billboard Hot 100 longevity
Nigerian singer Tems’ “What You Need” has reportedly reached 29 weeks on the US Billboard Hot 100, surpassing the reported 29-week benchmark associated with South African singer Tyla’s “Water”.
The song, which peaked at No. 29 on the Billboard Hot 100, has continued to chart since its debut in February 2026. A report published by HypeTribe on October 17 said the single had spent 29 weeks on the chart.
Released on November 21, 2025, “What You Need” is part of Tems’ seven-track EP, Love Is a Kingdom. The song was produced by Tems and GuiltyBeatz and released through RCA Records and Since ’93.
Its chart performance has also extended to radio. “What You Need” topped Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay chart for three consecutive weeks in August and later reached No. 1 on the Rhythmic Airplay chart, according to reports on its radio performance.
The song’s continued run follows the success of Tems’ earlier solo single, “Free Mind,” which spent 21 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at No. 46. “What You Need” has since surpassed that run, becoming her longest-charting solo song on the US chart.
Tyla’s “Water”, released in 2023, peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became an international hit after gaining traction through a viral dance challenge. The song helped establish the South African singer as one of the continent’s most successful breakout acts in the US market.
Tems has also appeared on the Hot 100 through collaborations, including Future’s “Wait for U”, featuring Drake, which debuted at No. 1 in 2022. Her current solo run marks another milestone in her career.
