Music legend 2Baba has weighed in on the heated debate surrounding Wizkid and the late Afrobeat icon Fela Kuti, saying the comparison between both artists makes no sense and helps no one.

During a recent appearance on a podcast, the singer explained that Fela and Wizkid come from two very different worlds of music and should be judged by the standards of their own time.

He said arguments about who is “bigger” ignore the realities of history and creativity, adding that Fela’s influence was built in an era of political struggle, while Wizkid’s success reflects a digital age of global streaming and modern pop culture.

The discussion gained attention after a public disagreement between Wizkid and Fela’s son, Seun Kuti, which spilled onto social media and triggered widespread reactions from fans and industry figures.

2Baba urged listeners to stop turning music into a competition and instead recognise the unique paths each artist has carved for Nigerian music.

Fela Kuti is remembered not only as a musician but as the founder of Afrobeat and a voice of resistance whose work shaped African music and politics. Wizkid, on the other hand, represents a newer generation of artists who have taken Nigerian sound to international charts and festivals.

2Baba, who has spent over two decades in the industry and recently marked 25 years as a recording artist, said both legacies deserve respect without being placed on a scale of superiority.

The debate has resurfaced at a time when Fela’s legacy is receiving fresh global honour, following his posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award earlier this year, which was accepted by his family in Los Angeles.
