Adekunle Gold explains why he reported X user over daughter’s fake death claim
Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold has spoken about his decision to report an X user who falsely announced the death of his daughter, saying he could tolerate attacks against himself but would not allow his family to be targeted.
The singer discussed the incident during an appearance on the One54 Africa Podcast, where he recalled how the social media user spread a false claim about his daughter.
“I can take anything. Talking about me all day, I’m cool. I signed up for this, not my daughter,” Gold said.
The singer said he reported the matter to the authorities rather than taking action against the user himself.
The X user, identified as Adeboye Samuel Adeyeye, was later prosecuted after a series of posts targeting Gold and his family. He pleaded guilty to charges including cyberbullying, cyberthreats, and cyberharassment before the Federal High Court in Lagos.
Adeyeye was sentenced in May 2026 to concurrent prison terms, with an option to pay a fine of ₦1 million. He was later released after the fine was paid by a benefactor.
The case followed a false post in which Adeyeye announced the alleged death of Gold and Simi’s daughter, Deja. The claim was untrue.
For the singer, the case was not simply about an attack directed at a public figure but about protecting his daughter from the consequences of online falsehoods.
