The Federal Government is considering replacing the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) khaki uniform with Adire as part of a wider effort to modernise the scheme and promote locally made products.

Youth Development Minister Ayodele Olawande said the proposal is designed to strengthen Nigeria's textile industry by encouraging the use of fabrics produced within the country. According to him, government institutions should support local manufacturers instead of relying on imported materials.

The proposed uniform change is one of several reforms expected to reshape the NYSC. The government also plans to improve the orientation programme, introduce more practical skills training and ensure corps members are posted to organisations that match their academic backgrounds and career goals.

Olawande added that security remains a priority in the new plan. He said corps members could be deployed to locations where they are more familiar with the environment, while the military would continue to support the scheme despite plans for civilian leadership.

The reforms are expected to take effect after the necessary legal amendments are completed. The government believes the changes will make the NYSC more relevant to today's economy while creating greater opportunities for young Nigerians.
