From Yaba thrift markets to Paris fashion week: Lagos model Rachel Ojuromi walks for Chanel
Nigerian model and content creator Rachel Ojuromi has made her international runway debut for iconic French fashion house Chanel at Paris Fashion Week.
The 22-year-old creative walked the catwalk for Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2027 show after capturing global attention by styling second-hand clothes on the streets of Lagos.
Ojuromi built her brand online by converting everyday Lagos spots into her personal runway. Walking past Yaba market stalls and the Red Line rail overpass, she created high-fashion videos using second-hand clothes sourced locally. She collaborated closely with her friend, designer Debby Fasingha, who restyled thrifted items, and videographer Odey, who filmed her weekly clips.
Her big breakthrough came after she and Fasingha recreated looks from Chanel’s Métiers d’Art collection using entirely thrifted pieces. The viral video caught the attention of Chanel's creative director, Matthieu Blazy, who commented "Everything" on her post. Months later, Ojuromi received an official invitation to fly to France and walk for the brand wearing a gray and yellow tweed outfit.
Reacting to her debut, Ojuromi dedicated the milestone to her team and her mother, Maria Osayi Ojuromi, who sold clothes her entire life. She encouraged young African creatives to trust their vision, proving that great ideas can open doors anywhere in the world.
Before getting noticed by top international modelling agencies and fashion figures like Naomi Campbell and SZA, Ojuromi worked independently in Lagos without big budgets. Her journey from styling second-hand outfits in Yaba to walking the Chanel runway in Paris shows how social media and raw creativity continue to connect young African talent to the global fashion stage.
