Content creator Emmanuel Obruste, popularly known as GehGeh, has said the wedding ceremony that went viral last weekend was staged as a publicity stunt rather than a real marriage.

Speaking in an interview with StreamRewind, Obruste said the event was organised deliberately to gauge how the public would react. "We organised everything as a normal promo. And so far, apart from the fact that we purposely did it, I still wanted to get the public's reactions," he said.

Videos from the ceremony first surfaced Saturday, showing Obruste and a woman in matching burgundy traditional outfits at what appeared to be a traditional wedding, complete with an invitation card naming the couple as Mary and Prosper and a clip of the woman performing first-feeding rites.

The footage quickly drew accusations of hypocrisy from fans and fellow content creators, given Obruste's online brand,  built partly around his self-styled "GehGeh School of Marriage"  has frequently steered followers away from conventional marriage. Members of his own family reportedly also questioned why they weren't invited to what they believed was a real ceremony.

Obruste pushed back on the idea that he had ever told people not to marry at all, saying his actual position favours polygamy over monogamy. "I did not kick against marriage. I said, 'Do not marry, and even if you must marry, go for polygamy.' This is because polygamy is the path that guides a man's heart from heartbreak," he said.

The controversy deepened over the weekend after a man identifying himself as Obruste's former manager alleged in a widely circulated video that Obruste's advice cost him his own three-year marriage, claiming he separated from his wife on Obruste's counsel only to then watch Obruste secretly wed. Obruste reposted the video himself on TikTok, amplifying the fallout rather than distancing himself from it.

Obruste's explanation now sits alongside several other claims he has floated in the past week, including telling followers to look for signs the footage was AI-generated.

It remains unclear which version of events he intends to stand by going forward.
