Media personality and actress Toke Makinwa has said she no longer buys gifts for men she's romantically involved with, tracing the decision back to a relationship she had as an undergraduate.

Speaking on a recent episode of her podcast, Toke Moments, alongside guest and reality star Beauty Tukura, Makinwa said the shift followed a relationship with a man 10 years older than her, during which she used a semester's school fees to fund his birthday celebration.

"I stopped buying men gifts after I dated a man who was 10 years older than me. I spent my university semester's school fees to celebrate his birthday and took him to an Italian restaurant in Victoria Island," she said. "He ordered everything on the menu. When we got home… there was another woman in his house. That broke me."

Makinwa described the experience as traumatic and said it has shaped how she approaches gift-giving in relationships since.

The comments continue a running theme on her podcast, where Makinwa has repeatedly weighed in on money and dynamics between men and women in relationships.

In a separate episode this month, she said she has never dated a man who asked her for money and called it an immediate deal breaker if one did. She has also argued that dating "within your wage" prevents the kind of financial strain that leads to resentment in relationships, and previously described relationships between men and women as inherently transactional, a comment that drew significant online debate at the time.
