The Federal Government has insisted that Nigeria remains safe despite the United States ordering the departure of non-emergency embassy staff and their families from Abuja.

The US authorised the evacuation on Wednesday. It also updated its travel advisory, urging Americans to reconsider travel to Nigeria because of crime, terrorism, kidnapping and civil unrest.

The US Embassy in Abuja has closed for visa appointments. Applicants must check their emails for rescheduled dates. However, visa operations at the US Consulate General in Lagos continue without interruption.

American citizen services remain available for emergencies and by appointment.

The Federal Government responded on Thursday. It stated that Nigeria continues to maintain a stable security environment and urged citizens to remain calm.

The US cited a deteriorating security situation across 23 states in the country.

The Federal Government maintained that the nation is safe for both residents and visitors.
