Simi Responds After Old Tweets Resurface and Stir Online Debate
Nigerian singer Simi has addressed the renewed attention on some of her old social media posts after they sparked criticism online.
The backlash followed her recent comment condemning rape during discussions around a sexual assault case involving TikToker Mirabel. While many supported her stance, others went digging into her past tweets and brought up posts she made more than a decade ago.
Some of the resurfaced tweets, written in 2012, described playful moments with children at a daycare run by her mother. The wording in those posts upset some users, who accused the singer of being inappropriate.
Simi, however, said the tweets were taken out of context.
She explained that at the time, she was helping at her mother’s daycare and often shared random daily experiences on Twitter, as was common back then. According to her, the posts were never meant to sound sexual or disturbing but were simply observations about children being playful and affectionate.
The singer added that she was not famous at the time and did not imagine that casual tweets from her youth would one day be pulled out and misinterpreted by strangers.
To avoid further issues, she said she has deleted some of the old posts to protect her family. Still, she made it clear that her values have not changed.
Simi stressed that she has always spoken against rape and sexual abuse and that her recent statement was not for attention but a reflection of who she truly is.
She ended by urging people not to twist her past words into something they were never meant to be, saying her message remains simple: sexual violence should never be tolerated.
