'Throat Trouble Cost Me Over a Million Dollars in Bookings' - Tekno
Afrobeats star Tekno has opened up about a health scare that pushed him to refund over a million dollars in booking fees.
Speaking on Cool FM, the singer said he battled a throat issue between 2017 and 2019 that left him unable to sing or perform, eventually forcing him to fly to the US for surgery.
He said the timing hit hardest because it came at the peak of his career.
"I was refunding so much money. I think I refunded over a million dollars in shows," Tekno said.
He said he had to cancel bookings and pay out of pocket to fulfil obligations, on top of covering the cost of the surgery itself.
Tekno said he searched the world for the right doctor and ended up in New York after failing to find the standard of care he needed in Nigeria.
For Tekno, getting through it changed how he sees things. He said he's learned to be grateful just to still be making music.
On Cool FM, he also spoke about his new project, an 8-track EP called 'Where Did Love Go,' built around the genre-blending sound he's known for.
