Tinubu Suspends FAAN Cashless Payment at Airports After Gridlock Fiasco
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered a pause on the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) cashless payment policy following chaotic scenes at major airports.
The system, launched on March 1, required passengers to pay digitally at airport gates, parking lots, and lounges using “Go Cashless” cards or POS devices, a move intended to curb cash handling after decades of manual payments.
However, the rollout sparked heavy traffic jams, long queues, and missed flights, particularly at Murtala Muhammed International Airport and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. Passengers flooded social media with complaints about delays and frustration.
Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo confirmed that President Tinubu instructed authorities to temporarily revert to the old system while redesigning a more traveller-friendly model that balances convenience with revenue transparency.
For now, airport users can pay as before while FAAN works on improving the cashless system to prevent future disruptions.
