Media personality Daddy Freeze has opened up on his decision to leave the service of songs held in honour of late Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo.

Speaking during an Instagram Live session, Freeze said he exited the event after gospel singer Mercy Chinwo took the stage, arguing that the nature of the performance did not align with what he expected from a funeral gathering.

The service of songs, which took place in Lagos last Wednesday, drew a large turnout of entertainers, clergy members, family, friends, and colleagues who gathered to celebrate the life and legacy of the actor.

Reflecting on the event, Freeze said funeral ceremonies should maintain a more solemn atmosphere, adding that he prefers softer music and hymns during such occasions.

In his words, he said:

“Does Mercy Chinwo not have soft music? Mercy Chinwo climbed the pulpit and turned the place into a concert. At that point, I got up and left. Does Mercy Chinwo not have soft music? Do you understand what a funeral is? The kind of music that should be played at a funeral is soft music. They should have just played hymns for like two hours, then I would have sat down there and enjoyed it. So at the time she was performing, I just got up and left.”

Several gospel artistes ministered during the event, including Mercy Chinwo, Peterson Okopi, Moses Bliss, Ebuka Songs, and the Laud Urban Choir.

Alex Ekubo’s service of songs formed part of the activities organised to honour the late actor, with colleagues and admirers paying tribute to his contributions to the Nigerian film industry.
