US Clears the Air on New Visa Rules for Nigerian Students
The United States Mission in Nigeria has reassured Nigerian students that the new U.S. visa policy will not affect those who already hold valid student and exchange visas.
After worries spread online about fresh visa restrictions, the Mission explained that Nigerians with active F1 (student) and J1 (exchange) visas can still travel to the United States and continue their studies as planned.
This simply means if your visa is still valid, nothing has changed for you.
The new rule, known as a presidential order, only targets people who were outside the U.S. and did not yet have a visa when it started. It does not cancel visas that were already issued before the policy took effect.
While the U.S. has paused the issuance of some new visas for Nigerians, including visitor and certain student visas, officials stressed that current visa holders are not part of the restriction.
Nigeria is among several countries affected by the partial suspension, which is part of broader immigration and security adjustments. Earlier this year, visa validity for many Nigerians had already been reduced to shorter periods.
With this clarification, U.S. authorities hope to calm students and exchange participants who feared their education plans might be disrupted.
For now, the message is clear: If you already have a valid F1 or J1 visa, your study or exchange programme in the U.S. can go on as usual.
