Wike Can Support Any Candidate He Wants — APC Reacts to FCT Poll Results
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has responded calmly to reports that FCT Minister Nyesom Wike may back a different candidate in future elections, stating that he remains free to support whoever he chooses.
The comment came after APC secured victories in five out of six area councils in the February 2026 FCT local government elections, with PDP winning only Abaji. Speaking through party spokespersons and leaders in Abuja, APC officials downplayed any potential rift or concern over Wike's political moves.
A senior APC chieftain in the FCT said: “Wike is a big stakeholder in our government. He delivered for us in 2023 and continues to play a key role in the Renewed Hope Agenda. If he decides to support any candidate in 2027 or beyond, that is his democratic right. We don't own anybody. Politics is about interests and alliances. What matters is the progress of Nigeria.”
The statement appears to be a deliberate effort to avoid escalating tensions amid speculation that Wike might shift support away from the APC or President Tinubu in the lead-up to 2027.
Wike has not directly commented on the election results or any 2027 plans recently, but his influence in the FCT remains significant. He played a pivotal role in Tinubu's 2023 victory in the territory and has maintained a visible presence in the administration.
The APC's relaxed tone suggests confidence in its current dominance in the FCT and a strategy of keeping doors open rather than confrontation. As political realignments intensify ahead of 2027, Wike's next moves continue to be closely watched by observers across party lines.
